Just like the fauna, the Malagasy flora had an distinct evolution of the one of the African continent, from which Madagascar was separated 165 million years ago. It therefore presents a strong endemism level, i.e. species which are not to be found elsewhere:
- 85% of the 12000 vegetable species
- 94% of the trees and shrubs
- 85% of the herbaceous plants

Among remarkable species of the vegetable kingdom, those of the baobab trees - 6 of the 8 known species on the planet are exclusively in Madagascar. The baobab tree nicknamed the "bottle" baobab (photo 3) is a strange tree, with an enormous trunk crowned by tiny branches, which look anyway more like roots in the air...
Also to be mentioned is the trihedral palm tree, very rare example of triple symmetry among vegetables, the family of the didiereaceae (photo 1) and the euphorbiae (photo 2), or the ravinala (photo 4), a tree in the shape of a fan which became a symbol for Madagascar.
Octopus tree of the family of the didiereaceae - Androy, endemic species
Euphorbia stenoclada or famata - Androy, endemic species
Baobab tree nicknamed the "bottle" baobab - perhaps a one thousand y.o tree
The tree of the traveler or ravinala
endemic species, symbol of Madagascar which appears on the national flag and the logo of the national airline company
